Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Our work for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council focused on the refurbishment of specific parts of the ground, first and second floor of its Civic Centre. This included the installation of new mechanical and electrical equipment, the construction of a glazed café within the courtyard on the ground floor and the installation of a completely new staircase with attached lighting system.

The staircase, a striking construction in the centre of the entrance foyer, was designed by the Council. Lights hang in the space inside the circular staircase, and coloured lights were installed in the walls. These slowly fade from one colour to another.

The site remained in occupation throughout the duration of the build, and council employees needed regular access to various parts of the building. Our experience of working in occupied premises meant that we were able to create a structured phasing plan, making affected areas available as soon as possible and ensuring that building users could go about their daily work uninterrupted.
