Following the completion of the new sixth form building at Orleans Park School, Lakehouse was delighted to attend the official opening of the new facilities. The school welcomed Sir David Attenborough as their Guest of Honour at the opening.

In 1993, Orleans Park had been privileged to have their original teaching block opened by Sir David’s brother, Lord Attenborough of Richmond upon Thames. In view of this, and in honour of both Lord Attenborough and himself, Sir David gave permission for the Sixth Form building to be named the Attenborough Building.

Guests included Deputy Mayor: Cllr Peter Buckfield, Lord True, Nick Whitfield, Director of Children’s Services, members of Richmond Council’s building development team and representatives from Lakehouse. They were given a tour of the new facilities, which include specialists labs for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, a fantastic Media Suite, two Computer Science rooms and a new school Hall along with several new teaching rooms.

Sir David Attenborough addressed the invited guests telling them that “I am honoured and flattered this building should carry my family’s name and I am particularly thrilled it should carry my brother’s name”. He went on to give a warning to students in the packed hall, telling them “we are dependent on the natural world and if the natural world is damaged, we are damaged….the future is going to be tough but the better qualified you are, the better chance we have in determining what is going to happen in years to come.” Sir David then unveiled the plaque that will be mounted in the new building.

Elaine Ball, Headteacher, said “We are delighted with the addition of this Sixth Form building. We are an ‘Outstanding’ school and we offer an outstanding education for our students that extends beyond the exam results. We have always looked forward to being able to extend the excellent education we offer to beyond 16 and to improve the quality and variety of offer to the young people of Richmond."

Orleans Park School made a conscious effort to thank the Lakehouse Team for all their efforts and are delighted with the new building.
