Smart meters are electronic devices, which replace traditional meters for gas and electricity, recording the amount of gas or electricity you use in intervals of an hour or less.

This information is communicated back daily to utility companies for more accurate monitoring which can save money for the consumer. In 2009 the Government introduced new legislation and announced that smart meters will be rolled out to all homes and small businesses by the year 2025, in order to reduce the UK's carbon footprint.
