A Lakehouse Construction project at the Chadwell Heath Campus at Redbridge College has been singled out at the Surface Design Awards as winner of the Light and Exterior Surface award.

The Box Theatre and Performing Arts Centre at the Campus includes music recording studios, teaching spaces and a 264-seat performance space doubles as a multipurpose hall with retractable seating making room for enrolment, exhibitions and gatherings. The winning component was the theatre's translucent polycarbonate rainscreen panels, chosen for their range of colours, transparency, lightweight look and feel, and their ability to be backlit. As well as the cutting edge treatment to the external walls, attention was given to an adjacent boiler chimney, making it a bold landmark and with backlit signage to advertise the college, a beacon for the theatre and the new face of the campus.

The project, carried out in partnership with Redbridge College, Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt Architects and MJA Associates, was awarded a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating and has also been long listed for the World Architecture News Colour in Architecture Awards.
